Here’s what I learned you should do as a black female Solo Travel Girlie while on the road to make your trip as safe and as worry free as possible:

1. Prepare Your Transportation:

Whether you’re packing your Toyota or Renting a full size RV, you want to ensure you make it from point A to point be with the least amount of problems as possible. Create a list of all the things you need to check on your vehicle before you leave. If you’ve decided to rent a car or an RV, ensure that the proper maintenance has been been preformed on the vehicle before your travels. Make sure you provide as much information as possible regarding your estimated trip mileage to the service you’re using to rent your vehicle. That way they can match you with the best option for your travels.

2. Decide Your Itinerary

I’ve always been a fan of No- Itinerary life. Without an itinerary, you’re often able to have emore authentic experiences with locals or find hidden gems while getting lost. With an Iitinerary you may spend more time planning what do next.

Itinerary

  • Pros:
    • Helps you stay organized and ensures you don’t miss key attractions.
    • Provides a clear schedule and can be reassuring.
  • Cons:
    • May feel restrictive
    • Doesn’t allow for spontaneous changes.

No-Itinerary

  • Pros: Offers flexibility to explore and change plans on a whim. Encourages a more adventurous and relaxed trip.
  • Cons:
    • Might miss out on specific attractions or events.
    • Can be less efficient in terms of time management.

Now that you’re ready to go. It’s time to relax and take in the scenes. Don’t forget to take multiple breaks along the way to avoid road trip body pains.

  • Get Gas Often-There may be stretches of road where you wont see a gas station for 100 miles. Imagine running out of gas on a 95 degree day in the desert. Save yourself the headache and the worry. My Advice: When the gas tank is half full it’s time to start scouting for the nearest gas station.

1. Where to Stay

Whether you’re in an RV or a car you’re going to have to find a place to stay for the night. If you’ve preplanned this you can skip this step. While you may get lucky and find someplace to park for free for the night, consider your safety.

Here are a few resources to book last minute hotels

Hotel Tonight

I discovered Hotel Tonight toward the end of my trip for finding last-minute hotel deals.. It Is hands down the best app to use for last minute booking. The Secret Deal has a 15 minute time limit to redeem so make sure you have cell service otherwise you’ll miss out on the deal.

2. How to Stay Safe?

safety items
  • Life 360: An app that you can share your location with your family and friends so that they can know exactly where you are at any given moemnt or time. My favorite feature was being able to check in at different locations as I arrived so that my mom could know exactly where I was. She was hands down the most worried
  • Don’t drive at night: If possible do not drive throughout the night. I saw many deer and road kill along the roads as I was driving in the morning and all I could imagine was having gotten in a car accidentand stuck on the side of the road in the middle of the night.
  • Don’t tell people your’e solo: There’s a lot of strange people in the world. Don’t be a victim. Most times I would say I’m with friends who didn’t want to try this activity or they were waiting for me at the restaurant or hotel or wherever.
  • Carry some form of protection: Even mace or pepper spray can allow you seconds to get a way from a dangerous situation if needed
  • Always know where your car keys are and have them available if needed. I know most cars have the key fob, so that if you get close enough to the door you can just open it and get in but your keys can quickly become a weapon if needed
  • Press Power Button on iPhone 5 time for emergency services or alternatively hold Power button and side button down at the same time for SOS slider to appear and slide to call emergency services
